80s hip hop artists

An instrument’s strings are never perfectly in tune, and even the best violinists don’t place their fingers on the exact right place on the fingerboard. By alternating these two wonky A’s, Bach is drawing our attention to the physicality of the instrument, and to the way that the subtle microtones you get from physically playing it rub uncomfortably against each other. Guitarists use this same technique all the time, and it’s no big surprise that the chaconne sounds so great on guitar.

“Drip Too Hard”: They double the choruses and end the second verse with some title/refrain stuff. Hey, you know, one trend that I’d like to call cemented this year is that song form is becoming more and more lyric based. As songs are increasingly built around one single loop phrase, you have to base their form off of something, so it might as well be words. Because it used to be that the chorus, verse, and bridge would all have different chord changes, which would help determine the form. That’s just no longer so.

A good vocal coach will instruct you on diaphragmatic breathing, and on becoming aware of your body as you sing; keeping good posture; releasing tension etc. He or she will help you to identify your range, give you exercises to improve your technique, and guide you through the material you wish to sing. Finally, he or she will tell you to practice every single day!

I can’t imagine that’s pleasant on our canine friend’s ears. You might be thinking, “well what about dog whistles?” But dogs don’t exactly “enjoy” those sounds, especially if they’re used in training (where they’ll have preconceived responses to certain frequencies). High-pitched noises are often troubling and anxiety-inducing to dogs.

But Mitski (she’s much more impressive than Sum 41, not sorry) has a voice and quality in her music that feels super cathartic — it’s like she’s reading from your diary and releasing your demons for you. She’s also Asian-American, and I grew up with zero Asian-American musicians to look up to.

There’s nothing surprising about it at all; people like lamento bass, and African diaspora musicians are smart enough to deliver it straight up over decent beats. He continues, “This bass line is a fate from which we cannot escape.”

When we say that a piece of music is in a particular key, it means that it’s leaving out some of the notes. Bach’s chaconne is in D minor, so it only uses the notes D, E, F, G, A, B♭, and C. (And sometimes C# to add some drama to the chords.) That’s a more manageable number of notes to keep track of in your head. Also, they’re all related in a variety of nifty, simple mathematical ways. In D minor, you usually avoid using the notes E♭, G♭, A♭, and B. Those notes sound “wrong,” or in music theory terms, dissonant.

Picture the traditional scene of a “music creation team” in a studio — in attendance you may find the artist, the band, the manager, possibly the A&R rep of the label, the audio engineer, etc. Maybe you’ve hired a team of songwriters and curated a set of songs to record from their work. These roles are the traditional puzzle pieces required to produce good music.

I often wonder what would happen if we bring back more of this kind of multilayered, allegorical thinking, this juicy stuff that made the music of Bach and others so meaningful in its day? Reviving these older creative methods and conceptions of music makes a worthy and profound experiment.
